High School Musical 3 set for Halloween honours

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Once more with feeling? Friday night's trick-or-treating could tie up a few prospective movie patrons, but it's hard to see how "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" can be kept from repeating atop the weekend box office in North America.

A 50% drop would see the Disney hit fetch $21 million (12.75 million pounds) this session, and it's unlikely either of the frame's wide openers will top that.

The Weinstein Co.'s R-rated comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" seems to be tracking well enough in prerelease surveys of prospective patrons to produce an opening in the teen millions. But it appears Freestyle Releasing's PG-13 horror film "The Haunting of Molly Hartley" could be hurt enough by Halloween diversions that even a $10 million opening proves out of reach.

Meantime, Lionsgate's "Saw V" is likely to drop at least a bit further than 50% from last weekend's $30 million debut. The R-rated sequel still could grab second place during its sophomore session -- depending on how "Zack and Miri" performs.

"We're very optimistic," Weinstein Co. distribution boss Steve Bunnell said of opening prospects for the raunch-and-romance comedy. "We have very strong awareness, even in the competitive landscape."

Directed by Kevin Smith, "Zack and Miri" stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as cash-strapped platonic friends who decide to, well, make a porno. Executives hope cast talk-show stumping will help boost their film's opening haul. But though Rogen, Banks and Smith have been embraced by distinct fan bases, it's questionable whether any of the trio can deliver an audience based on their individual renown.

"Molly" appears to be the most disadvantaged by the holiday's costumed diversions, but Freestyle chief Mark Borde said he has his fingers crossed that the Halloween hex won't hit the horror film too severely.

"That's all we've been talking about," Borde said. "About a third of the camp says it won't have any effect, a third says it will have a good effect, and a third says it will hurt us. I think we might get a little stung on Friday, (but) we're praying for a little rain and cold."

"Molly" stars Haley Bennett ("College") in the title role.

Elsewhere this session, Universal expands Clint Eastwood's Angelina Jolie starrer "Changeling" to almost 1,900 locations, a week after it enjoyed a strong bow on 15 screens in nine markets. The drama will likely finish ahead of "Molly" on the weekend chart. Warner Bros. also sets Guy Ritchie's platforming "RocknRolla," to a barely wide 825 playdates, which could help the gangster release rumble with "Molly" for the next rung in the rankings.

The "Changeling" expansion bears particularly close watching -- for how the film is received by critics at the cusp of awards season and for how its box office performance bears on prospects for another Eastwood film. Warners recently slotted the Eastwood-helmed and -toplined drama "Gran Torino" for a limited bow December 17.

High School Musical 3 Short Review

At last, High School Musical makes its big-screen debut. Troy (Zac Efron), Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and the gang are now high-school seniors, facing the pressures of prom night, graduation and having to perform their very own musical. The film focuses on choices: will Troy turn to basketball or acting? Can his and Gabriella’s love survive the distance when she goes off to college? It’s easy to mock High School Musical for being so squeaky-clean, it makes Grease 2 seem like Deep Throat, but it’s refreshing to see teenagers free of angst and drugs. The cast is good (especially Efron), the songs have a catchy S Club 7 groove and the dance routines — choreographed by the director Kenny Ortega (Dirty Dancing) — are bigger and better than ever.

High School Musical 3:Beating Box office Expectations

On Thursday, we sniffed at HSM 3's ranking as only the 13th most popular movie in terms of advance ticket sales on Fandango. We were impressed by its #1 spot in advanced sales for this weekend, but given the box-office frenzy displayed by Miley Cyrus' 3D Hannah Montana concert movie last spring, we sort of expected a simlar level of advance enthusiasm for the HSM kids. At the time, Hannah Montana was Fandango's fifth biggest advance-ticket seller in the company's history.

Well, now HSM 3 has hit the big screen, and it's surpassing everyone's expectations. Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and co. opened with $16.9 million Friday, which is way more than the experts predicted. It also beat the opening-day record for a live-action musical and a live-action G-rated movie.

As with most kids movies, the real box-office business is supposed to take place during the Saturday and Sunday matinees. So with the impressive Friday debut and even more business expected for Saturday and Sunday, box-office gurus are now upping their weekend projections.

Nikki Finke says her box-office experts are raising HSM's estimated weekend haul from $40 million to $60 million, which would far and away surpass Hannah Montana's opening weekend total of $31 million. In fact, that would put HSM 3 close to Hannah Montana's $65 million total for its entire box-office run. It should be interesting to compare the per-screen averages, though, since Hannah only opened in 683 theaters while HSM opened in 3,623.

As we noted on Thursday, despite the HSM stars' tabloid appeal, Disney was taking a bit of a gamble releasing the sequel to two TV movies on the big screen. Most box-office analysts went into the weekend thinking the same thing. After all, there's really nothing to compare this HSM 3 to since no one can recall a TV movie being turned into a successful big-screen movie. An HSM insider e-mailed the same to Nikki Finke today:

"HSM3 is a hard film to track because most kids will see it at least 2x this weekend. There are no metrics to a film that has repeat viewing, and kids that have to be accompanied by parents," one HSM3 insider just emailed me. "Disney internal folks have no idea what to expect because what historical data could be a comparison. Nothing. I have a feeling this weekend will be a game changer…"

This is great news for Disney, which has the lowest market share of the six major movie studios thanks to a not-so-spectacular summer (Swing Vote, anyone?). But with HSM 3, still-strong business from Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Disney's annual Halloween re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D, this could be a big weekend for the Mouse House and one that could finally boost its box-office market share out of the basement.

Emotional end for 'High School Musical 3' actors

Ashley Tisdale says she burst into tears while filming her final scenes for High School Musical 3: Senior Year because she is devastated her part in the franchise is over.

The actress has been involved in all three of the hit teen movies so far, but won't be playing Sharpay Evans for a fourth time.

And she insists she wasn't the only one to shed a tear on the last day - her castmates Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Corbin Blue all got emotional too.

She says, "We went into the last day thinking, 'It'll all be fine 'cause we're all really good friends and we're so close."

"It wasn't even the last scene - we couldn't even get through it. We were crying and just so emotional over the whole thing."

"We're so attached to each other. We've had such fun doing these movies. It's definitely something that's tough to leave and say goodbye to."

Tisdale also confirms she is not the only one who will miss out on a further Disney follow-up.

She adds, "I heard they're going to do a High School Musical 4, but we have nothing to do with it. I think we're all doing other projects and moving on."

Ashley Tisdale takes on another high school musical role in ‘Picture This!’

Ashley Tisdale is not a teenager. But the “High School Musical” star enjoys playing one on TV.

The 23-year-old portrays high school senior Mandy in the new ABC Family movie “Picture This!” (tonight at 8).

“I just look very young for my age, which is great, because I’m sure when I’m 40 I’m going to like it even better,” Tisdale said during a recent conference call with reporters.

“I think that if I can play young as long as I can, that would be awesome, because once you change into that adult phase, you can’t really go back. So I want to play these characters for as long as I can.”

In the movie, Mandy catches the eye of popular Drew Patterson (Robbie Amell). He invites her to a big party at his house. Unfortunately, Mandy has been grounded by her overprotective dad (Kevin Pollak) and spends the movie trying to outsmart her father and make it to the party.

“I completely thought it was just like me and my dad and how my dad is very overprotective,” Tisdale said about the first time she read the script. “He would have totally done the same thing, and I love him for it, but it was the same relationship that I share with my father, so I thought it would be hilarious.”

Tisdale recently finished filming “High School Musical 3” and takes seriously her position as a role model for young girls.

“I think it’s really cool in this movie that Mandy really likes the popular guy, but it’s not one of those stories where she changes drastically and he finally notices her,” she said. “Maybe she gets a little more confident inside and takes off her glasses, but she doesn’t really change that much. He notices her from the very beginning. I think it is a really good message for kids. I think that’s what every kid thinks - that in order to get the popular guy, you have to look different. But really it’s about how you feel inside.”

Her fan base helps guide Tisdale to her next projects, which include the upcoming movie “They Came From Upstairs,” producing a new TV series for the Disney Channel and recording a second album.

“When I’m reading scripts, some of them are really sexy, and I wouldn’t go there and I’m not comfortable going there right now. I’m very comfortable with what I’m doing right now. But at the same time, I also think about what I’m really passionate about and what I want to do next. But I think my fans will really grow with me with that. I’m not ready to jump off and do something crazy. Not yet.”
